    Language Arts – Elementary

In elementary school (K-5) a heavy emphasis is given to developing literacy. Students spend roughly 180 minutes a day in reading, writing, and media literacy. The district adopted a comprehensive literacy program, Journeys, from Houghton Mifflin three years ago as a means of addressing the new Utah Core. The Utah Core has raised the rigor for all students and serves to give focus not only on rich literature but also on an informational test as well.

During the school day, students are provided opportunities for enrichment and or interventions as needed. Each school has a reading center staffed by licensed literacy specialists and trained paraprofessionals. Each student is assessed in reading proficiency and for those students who read below grade level, research-based interventions are provided.
