College Readiness -
All About Accommodations

Last month, students in Kelsey Cunningham's Content Link 12 class had the opportunity to learn all about college accommodations from our local expert PC Reads Executive Director, Elissa Aten.

Each fall, Elissa coordinates an evening presentation with a diverse panel of participants to speak to parents and students about the process for applying for accommodations and accessing them at college.   It is always an informative night with the community, so this year Elissa offered to come into the classroom and speak directly to the students.   She tailored the presentation to the student's specific post-high plans, engaging them in a discussion about their current accommodations and which ones to continue at college or in their careers.

The essential message for students was the need for self-advocacy.   Accommodations are available through the Disability Resource Centers at all colleges and trade schools.   The difference from high school to the next education level is that students have to apply for the accommodations and, once granted, advocate the coordination of the accommodations with their professors and academic testing centers.     Elissa's advice - Practice now.  Become comfortable with what accommodations you need and communicate with your current teachers.   The more you advocate now, the easier it will be at college and in your career.

Thank you Elissa for your support of our students as they prepare for their post-high adventures!
