Dear Park City School District Community,

This evening, the video of the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols, who died after a traffic stop by police earlier this month, was released by Memphis officials. To say the very least, the video is shocking.

Like other videos we have seen in the past, the violence depicted has the potential to cause great pain for students, staff, and families alike. The video may trigger past traumatic responses for many. Mr. Nichols’ family has strongly urged parents to protect children from seeing this disturbing video.  However, if your child does see an excerpt, it is normal to have strong reactions to it. It will be important for parents to permit their children to talk about what they are feeling or experiencing and for parents to reassure their children that our local law enforcement work to protect and care for all people.

It is difficult to know exactly what to say in response to the video. I can say that, in the Park City School District, we remain committed to ensuring a safe, welcoming, and positive learning environment in each of our schools. This is a commitment we take very seriously, and it is the reason I wanted to reach out to our PCSD community this evening.

If you are feeling dismayed or isolated as we learn more about the situation in the video, please know that you are not alone. We are fortunate to live, work, and learn in a school district community made up of people who truly support one another.  Our supportive relationship with our local PCPD and SCSO and SROs provides consistent and reliable response throughout our schools to any danger or concern. It is our hope that the trauma we are experiencing together will eventually help us all learn and grow as individuals and as a society.

Please know that counselors will be available to meet with students and staff now and in the coming days. If your child needs assistance dealing with this situation, please contact a counselor. You may set up an appointment with a counselor by calling or emailing your child’s school, or check the childmind.org site for resources such as “Helping Children Cope After A Traumatic Event.”

In short, we are here to support you and your family in any way we can. Just like we have over the years, we will get through this deeply challenging time together.

Sincerely,

Dr. Gildea
