Students at Jeremy Ranch Elementary receive 45 minutes of structured Physical Education (P.E.) two times per week. The instructors are Chip Cook and Maggie Shepherd. Chip earned her teaching certificate in P.E. and Health with a minor in Coaching from The University of Vermont, and a Master’s Degree in Physical Education from Utah State University. Chip has been teaching P.E. at Jeremy Ranch for 18 years, has two daughters, and coaches the Park City High School Girls Soccer Team during the fall season. Maggie recently came to Park City from New Jersey and this is her first year working in the P.E. department. Maggie worked in the reading room at JRES last year. She is very active in the community where she carts her four children (two sets of twins) to their ski races and other sporting events, and volunteers her time for their various activities.

The instructors teach the Utah Core objectives for Physical Education at all grade levels. Some of the content includes: health, fitness, gross and fine motor skills, dance, yoga, team sports, individual sports, playground games, cooperative games, and assorted team building activities. Our classes can also take advantage of our mountain climate to snowshoe when the weather permits. Chip also runs a jump rope club called The Jeremy Ranch Jumpers Monday through Thursday from 7:15-8:05 in the morning. This program is very successful with over 100 jumpers grades preschool through seventh grade. The jumpers perform during local events such as high school basketball games. This year (January 2014) the club performed at the University of Utah during halftime of the men’s Oregon basketball game!

Every year our students participate in Jump Rope for Heart and the Gold Medal Schools Initiative. Jeremy Ranch Elementary was one of the few Utah schools to reach the platinum level in the Gold Medal School challenge. All students look forward to the movement opportunities that Physical Education allows, and studies have shown that physical activity helps children to be more efficient learners. The instructors strive to provide a wide variety of activities in a safe and fun environment to allow many learning opportunities both socially and physically.
