• As a parent and as an educator, “It takes a village to raise a child” is a proverb that speaks volumes for me. Our entire community benefits when we raise our children well; and in order for our children to grow into their best selves, our entire community contributes in some way. Certainly the community’s elementary school plays a central role. As the principal of that school, I thought it may be helpful to share my perspective regarding the school’s role in partnering with parents. Together we can guide each of our children to a successful future. Thank you for reading, and welcome to Part I of the series, from the principal’s perspective.

    I wonder if you’re familiar with our mission statement? 

    The Jeremy Ranch Elementary School community believes:

    “Children are the living messages we send

    I take pride in working at a school that puts the why in our mission statement, instead of the what. Of course, we want to foster creative problem solving and develop potential, and the many other qualities listed in most school mission statements. However, the overarching reason that we all embrace this challenging work is that we’re creating the best future we can. We put in the extra effort because we expect that our efforts can positively alter the future for our students and our community. Furthermore, we’ve chosen to work in a public school, because we believe in high quality education for all students. 

    We often read in the news sobering statistics of how many educators leave the profession, particularly in the first five years of teaching. I believe that to be a testament to the immense challenge of teaching in today’s world, coupled with increasing scrutiny from outside the profession. It’s not a stretch to say that most educators I’ve had the honor of working with remain in the profession because it’s a calling. Education is a life’s purpose. We are invested in creating greater opportunities for our students, regardless of the challenges. This is why you see teachers’ cars in the school parking lot each weekend. This is why teachers schedule every minute of the day. This is why we’re exhausted in June and enthusiastic in August.

    I believe you already know this, and still, I think it’s worth repeating. We’re invested in the well-being of your children. We will do our level best each day to help our students grow as much as possible. What helps us ultimately helps your children, and partnering with parents helps us all. As partners in your children’s education, we ask for your support in the following ways:

    • Read. Read with your kids and read in front of your kids. And read books, magazines, and newspapers. To a child, an iPad doesn’t look like a book, it looks like a video game.
    • Make sure your children get enough sleep. Growing, learning, and navigating school is hard work. Well-rested kids are happier kids.
    • Be aware of screen time – yours and your child’s. There are pros and cons, but we’re noticing fewer pros and more cons with younger brains.
    • Send your kids outside. We’re so fortunate to live in a safe place and so close to nature. We’ve reduced homework demands primarily to make time at home even better. 
    • Embrace the social learning that school provides. We have over 600 students in this building each day, and they’re all under 10. There will be problems, and they can be unpleasant. We want our children to learn from mistakes so they don’t need to repeat them. 
    • Give the school the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps you’re familiar with the adage “I promise to believe half of what your child says about you, if you promise to believe half of what your child says about me.” As the adults in this equation, we should be able to agree that we all have your children’s best interests in mind.

    I appreciate you taking the time for this post. I remain tremendously fulfilled to serve as the principal of Jeremy Ranch Elementary, and my relationships within this amazing community make each day worthwhile.

    Como padre y como educador, “Se necesita una aldea para criar a un/a niño/a” es un proverbio que dice mucho para mí. Toda nuestra comunidad se beneficia cuando criamos bien a nuestro/as hijo/as; y para que nuestro/as hijo/as se desarrollen de la mejor manera, nuestra comunidad entera contribuye de alguna manera. Ciertamente, la escuela primaria de la comunidad juega un papel central. Como director de esta escuela, pensé que podría ser útil compartir mi perspectiva sobre el papel de la escuela en asociación con los padres. Juntos podemos guiar a cada uno de nuestro/as hijo/as hacia un futuro exitoso. Gracias por leer, y bienvenidos a la Parte I de una serie, desde la perspectiva del director.

    Me enorgullece trabajar en una escuela que pone el por qué en nuestra declaración de misión, en lugar del qué. Por supuesto, queremos fomentar la resolución creativa de problemas y desarrollar el potencial, y las muchas otras cualidades enumeradas en la mayoría de las declaraciones de misión de la escuela. Sin embargo, la razón principal por la que todos aceptamos este trabajo desafiante es que estamos creando el mejor futuro posible. Ponemos un esfuerzo extra porque esperamos que nuestros esfuerzos puedan alterar positivamente el futuro de nuestros estudiantes y nuestra comunidad. Además, hemos elegido trabajar en una escuela pública, porque creemos en una educación de alta calidad para todos los estudiantes.

Es por eso que ves los autos de lo/as maestro/as en el estacionamiento de la escuela cada fin de semana. Es por eso que lo/as maestro/as programan cada minuto del día. Por eso estamos exhaustos en junio y entusiastas en agosto.

    Creo que ya lo saben, y aun así creo que vale la pena repetirlo. Estamos invertidos en el bienestar de sus hijo/as. Haremos nuestro mejor esfuerzo cada día para ayudar a nuestros estudiantes a crecer lo más posible. Lo que nos ayuda en última instancia, ayuda a sus hijo/as, y la asociación con los padres nos ayuda a todos. Como socios en la educación de sus hijo/as, solicitamos su apoyo de las siguientes maneras:

    • Lea con sus hijo/as y lea enfrente de sus hijo/as. Y lean libros, revistas y periódicos. Para un/a niño/a, un iPad no parece un libro, parece un videojuego. 
    • Asegúrese de que sus hijo/as duerman lo suficiente. Crecer, aprender y navegar en la escuela es un trabajo duro. Lo/as niño/as bien descansados ​​son niño/as más felices. 
    • Tenga en cuenta el tiempo frente a la pantalla: el suyo y el de su hijo/a. Hay pros y contras, pero notamos menos pros y más contras en cerebros más jóvenes. 
    • Envíe a sus hijo/as afuera. Somos muy afortunados de vivir en un lugar seguro y tan cerca de la naturaleza. Hemos reducido la demanda de tareas principalmente para hacer que el tiempo en casa sea aún mejor.
