After-school students enrolled in Camp Hawk participated in a community service project to support Nuzzles and Co-Adoption Center on March 10 at Jeremy Ranch Elementary.
“I wanted to do a project that resonates more with elementary school children, and what better than animals, said Helen Hanahan, after-school coordinator.
Hanahan added that one of our student’s parents works for Nuzzles and Co as a Veterinarian, and they reached out to see what they could do to support the local animal adoption center.
“Last year, the kids made kitty toys, and they loved it,” said Hanahan. “This year, we decided to make dog toys and played around with a few ideas. We decided on a sock/tennis ball toy. Instead of buying fun, printed socks, we had the kids tie-dye white socks.”
Nuzzles and Co Adoption Center Medical Director Alyssa Hughes said that the little toys were a form of enrichment because they helped prevent dogs in the shelter from becoming bored and frustrated, and they keep their minds and bodies busy active, which is beneficial for helping prepare them for adoption.
“The fact that the kids wanted to help shelter pets was so meaningful, and we love that kids are learning all the ways to be a responsible pet parent,” said Hughes. “The Nuzzles pups thank the Camp Hawkers for the time and thoughtfulness that went into crafting these toys.”
The goal of our After-School Program is to provide a safe, educational, and enriching environment for children while providing a quality childcare option for parents. Students in grades K-5 who attend Jeremy Ranch, Trailside, McPolin, and Parley’s Park Elementary Schools are eligible to participate.
After-school programs are coordinated by the Park City Community Education Department with the support of the Park City Education Foundation. The programs are staffed with qualified, trained teachers and specialists who follow national after-school standards. PCEF funded the first PCSD After-school program at McPolin Elementary in 2007-2008, providing substantial funding for all four PCSD elementary schools today. The after-school programs are a PCEF signature program.
